The Pediatric Otolaryngology service at Mount Sinai provides for the management of the common and/or frustrating problems of childhood ear infections, hearing loss related to middle ear effusion, and nighttime breathing disorders related to enlargement of the tonsils and adenoids.
In addition to managing these more common conditions, the service is equipped to handle a wide range of pediatric diseases of the head and neck in children. State-of-the-art fiberoptic endoscopy equipment with extensive capacity for video documentation is available. Mount Sinai provides for the comprehensive management of pediatric airway disease, including endoscopic and open airway expansion, phonosurgery, and laser surgery. In addition, we are equipped to manage all types of pediatric otologic conditions, including chronic inflammatory disease, congenital ear anomalies and sensorineural hearing loss requiring cochlear implantation. Facilities also exist for extensive support services, including pediatric polysomnography, audiology, speech therapy, and swallowing evaluation.
A close affiliation with the Department of Pediatrics provides opportunities for teaching and consultation with the many specialties that interface with otolaryngology, such as genetics, allergy, pulmonology, hematology-oncology, intensive care medicine, infectious disease, and gastroenterology. Joint management teams (such as the cleft and craniofacial group) are further opportunities for cross-specialty discussion and treatment planning. In this manner the Department provides for the comprehensive management of otolaryngologic disorders of childhood.
