Pediatric Pumonary Care Center

Overview

The Pediatric Pulmonary Center at Mount Sinai has served the Tri-State area since 1978. Center staff perform outpatient and inpatient consultations with an integrated multidisciplinary team of professionals who are dedicated specifically to the practice of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine. The Center offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment of patients with chronic respiratory problems such as:

  • Apnea
  • Oxygen and ventilator dependency
  • Asthma
  • Sleep disorders
  • Bronchopulmonary dysplasia
  • Snoring
  • Chronic cough
  • Stridor
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Tuberculosis

Asthma

Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease of childhood, with a hospitalization rate of almost 3 per 1000 in the New York City area. A diagnosis of asthma, however, need not mean a childhood of missed school days, exercise intolerance, and limited activity. Today’s medications, when combined with a comprehensive team approach, can make control of asthma a reality. Pulmonary function testing performed by a pediatric specialist and education/support services for the family are essential components of our asthma program.

Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD)

BPD is the most common chronic respiratory disease of infancy, with an incidence of 2-3/1000 live births. Although BPD will improve with growth during the first years of life, careful integration of respiratory medications, cardiopulmonary monitoring, nutritional requirements, and developmental concerns will optimize control of this condition. We offer special expertise with nutritional assessments, infant pulmonary function testing, and home ventilator management.

Chronic Cough

Chronic cough can be one of the most frustrating conditions a family and pediatrician will face. The Pediatric Pulmonary Center has the ability to diagnose and treat the myriad underlying conditions associated with chronic cough, including foreign body aspiration, allergic rhinitis, primary ciliary dyskinesia, and psychosomatic cough. Procedures such as, sweat testing, nasal ciliary brushing and analysis, and bronchoprovocation testing are performed on-site at The Mount Sinai Hospital.

Cystic Fibrosis (CF)

Cystic fibrosis care at The Mount Sinai Hospital involves a multidisciplinary team approach that includes physicians, nurses, nutritionists, respiratory therapists, and social workers, all of whom are specially trained in the treatment of children and adults with CF. Our Care Center provides expertise with all aspects of CF, ranging from the latest antimicrobial strategies to nutritional optimization. We offer services that include pediatric spirometry, plethysmography, and comprehensive psychosocial support and evaluation.
