About Us

The Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center (MSAHC) was established in 1968 as the first primary care program in New York specifically designed for the health needs of adolescents. The Adolescent Health Center provides confidential comprehensive medical, mental health, family planning, and health education services to young people between the ages of 10 to 22.

The mission of the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center is to help each adolescent grow up happy, healthy, and well-educated—with hopes and opportunities for the future—by preventing disease and promoting health.

Serving Teens in the Community and Beyond

The Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center is based in East Harlem and supports primarily a broad, otherwise underserved population of children, adolescents, and young adults (ages 10 through 22) in East and Central Harlem. In a typical year, the MSAHC serves more than 10,000 patients, who log more than 50,000 visits. In addition to the kids from the neighboring community, others from throughout the five boroughs travel for up to five hours, round trip, to benefit from the MSAHC's welcoming environment, trust-inspiring staff, and affordable services.

Of all MSAHC's clients, 49% are Latino, 43% are African-American, 5% are White, 2% are Asian, 1% are Native American, and 99% are from East Harlem, Central Harlem, South Bronx, or other low-income New York City communities.

The Center is a free-standing building, which allows easy access to healthcare. Its multidisciplinary staff includes pediatricians who specialize in Adolescent Medicine, nurses and nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychiatrists, social workers, health educators, and support staff specially trained to work with adolescents.

MSAHC Services

The MSAHC offers a comprehensive array of medical, mental health, and reproductive health services, plus prevention education. Its multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers, nutritionists, and other health workers strive to help teens make informed decisions. The MSAHC at Mount Sinai and each of the two school-based clinics and 12 community-based mental health and/or health education services are staffed by bilingual healthcare providers. They are available to assist teenagers with services, information, and support programs on a wide range of healthcare matters. While the facilities are easily accessible and welcoming, the information shared between care provider and teen is always private and confidential.

The Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center operates school-based clinics in two local high schools. Other special programs at the Center include support groups for rape and incest survivors and a parenting program for young adults. The MSAHC maintains its own confidential registration process and record room. The MSAHC respects the rights of minors to receive confidential health care.

  • Adolescent Sensitive Care: The Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center is built upon respect for its patients. Care is provided to adolescents in a manner that respects their rights to make informed decisions, request confidential services and be co-partners in their own health care. All MSAHC staff are trained in providing services in a developmentally-appropriate manner.
  • Comprehensive Care: The Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center ensures that every patient who visits the Center receives comprehensive health care. All patients can access primary medical, mental health and reproductive health care services at any time.
