Research
As members of the faculty of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, members of the Rheumatology FPA are dedicated researchers as well as physicians. In fact, we treat research as a major part of our profession.
As medical staff members of a major treatment and research center, we are free to conduct research and to incorporate into our treatment strategies the very latest results from all medical specialties, including our own. This only enhances patient care.
We’re pleased to note that many of the diagnostic tools and treatments routinely used to care for rheumatic disorders today have been developed or refined by Mount Sinai rheumatologists. For example, Mount Sinai has developed into a major referral center for autoimmune disorders, such as vasculitis, scleroderma, and Sjogren's syndrome.
Dr. Peter Gorevic, Chief of the Division of Rheumatology, maintains a strong professional interest in Geriatric Rheumatology. In consultation with colleagues from the divisions of Geriatrics, Orthopedics, and Rehabilitation Medicine, Dr. Gorevic relies on a team approach to treating older patients suffering from frequently painful and activity-limiting diseases and disorders.
Every day of the year, the observations we make while treating patients are shaped into questions that are then tested through our research. Outcomes from our research then guide the individualized care we provide to every patient. Results from our investigations are shared with physicians worldwide through publication in peer-reviewed medical journals.
The result is that we’re able to deliver tomorrow’s medicine today.
Currently, physicians at our FPA are conducting research in areas bound to benefit patient care. For example, open-label studies now include investigations into new therapies for extrahepatic disease manifestations of Hepatitis C, including vasculitis, neuropathy, nephritis, and arthropathy; other studies are investigating novel treatments for the often-debilitating amyloid diseases, gout, and cryoglobulinemia.
Because of the superb reputations of our world-renowned rheumatologists and their colleagues in Geriatric Medicine, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, and Rehabilitation Medicine, patients frequently travel to The Mount Sinai Medical Center from all over the United States, and from other countries, for diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic and autoimmune disorders.
