The mission of the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program is to train intensivists who possess the academic, clinical, and research skills necessary to become leaders in the field of critical care medicine. The Program emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of critical care medicine and it is designed to provide an extensive experience in a variety of critical care settings. The goal of this Program is to ensure that the graduates are experts in managing critically ill patients and supervising critical care units.
The Program currently offers 16 accredited one- or two-year critical care fellowship positions to physicians board certified or eligible in internal medicine or anesthesiology. Faculty members with critical care training also have backgrounds in medicine, pulmonary, nephrology, geriatrics, cardiology, surgery, and anesthesiology.
The Critical Care Medicine Program is truly multidisciplinary. All the faculty members are board certified in Critical Care Medicine and come from various subspecialties including internal medicine, anesthesiology, pulmonary, nephrology, and surgery. In addition, faculty from the fields of neurology, neurosurgery, and obstetrics-gynecology actively participate in the education of the fellows. The fellows rotate through different ICUs in different hospitals and this gives them a broad sense of varied types of critical care practices ranging from the closed to the open type of ICU settings. The fellows participate as integral members of the team under close attending supervision. Extensive experience is gained in invasive and non-invasive monitoring and in all ICU-related procedures.
